Elders are called to serve among and provide spiritual protection for the Church body and are accountable to Christ and the Church membership. Elders are to provide overall leadership to the Church through prayer, the ministry of the Word, and pastoral care, and are to set the example for all Church members by their obedience to the mission of Christ and His Church (Matthew 28:1820; Acts 6:34; 20:2831; 1 Corinthians 4:1416; 1 Timothy 3:2; 5:17; Hebrews 13:7, 17; 1 Peter 5:14).

Elders are selected from the adult male membership of the Church as led by the Holy Spirit and affirmed by the Church membership. An Elder must have given evidence of spiritual maturity and service for an extended period of time. Elders include both staff and nonstaff members. The qualifications for Elders are contained in Acts 14:23; 15; 20; 1 Timothy 3:17; 5:1722; Titus 1:59; and 1 Peter 5:14.

The selection of Elders begins with nominations. Each year, the current team of Elders receive nominations for new Elders from the membership of Woodlands Community Church (WCC). Nominees then complete a questionnaire and participate in an interview process as implemented by the current Elders. As led by the Holy Spirit, current Elders will select men to present as proposed Elders. Such candidates are then presented to the Church at a Family Meeting, where they may be approved by a majority vote of the members in attendance at the Family Meeting.

Elders play an extremely important role in our Church, one that is not to be taken lightly. If you choose to nominate an elder, we ask that you prayerfully complete the form, evaluating each question honestly based on your knowledge of the nominee’s qualifications for the office of Elder at WCC. Please take time to read 1 Timothy 3:1-11 and Titus 1:59, which describe the qualifications of Elders. In order to fill out the form, we also ask that you listen to this sermon preached by David Platt, well known pastor/author, on the subject of Elder responsibilities and qualifications.
